The opening of the first four seals brings the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Rev 6:1-8. They symbolise the stages of war. One commentary on Revelation says that the horses symbolise the full circle of human depravity: Man’s lust to go to war, civil war, social injustice and famine, disease and death. This year, of course, is the centenary of the start of the Great War in 1914 – they called it the war to end all wars. They were wrong. The white horse rides out triumphantly, to conquer.
