May 2016 Exhibition
Revelation at St John’s, Dancing Shadows
Every weekend in May (not 30 April & 1 May) from 11.15am to 5.15pm
St John the Evangelist * Knoyle Road, Brighton BN1 6RB *
With paintings, drawings and stained glass work by Annelies Clarke, stained glass lamps by Jose Heasman and fused glass candleholders by Beth Midgley.
The book of Revelation seems to have so many shadows, that it is often difficult to make light of it. Light is of course, the key to shadows. The stronger the light, the more visible the shadows.
Apart from every day life paintings (light relief), there will be a large sketch for the painting 'About Time' (a painting of the whole book of Revelation) and the first pages for the Illuminated Book of Revelation.
We will have Early Summer Music, organized by Sandy Chenery, St John’s organist and choir master on the four Saturdays in May, at 5.30pm:
7 May Choral Evensong, sung by the combined choirs of St John’s, St Paul’s (West Street) and St Mary’s (Rock Gardens) with Balfour Gardiner’s Evening Hymn.
14 May Organ recital by John Kitchen, Edinburgh University Organist and Edinburgh City Organist.
21 May Brighton Chamber Ensemble, a programme of works by Mozart, Part and movements from Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time.
28 May Song Recital by Pauls Putnins (baritone) and Nancy Cooley (piano)
Guest speakers: Canon David Gutsell on Sunday 15 May at 10am and The Rt Rev Richard Jackson, Bishop of Lewes on Sunday 22 May at 10am.
Students from the Cedar Centre in Hollingdean, will do a shadow dance during the Private View around 5.15pm and they have made some extraordinary paintings made especially for this exhibition.
Amnesty International will have a table and the brochure painting Dancing Shadows will be for sale by sealed bids, the proceeds will go to Amnesty International.
